The Montessori Philosophy
The Montessori Method was developed by Dr. Maria Montessori of Italy in the early 1900s. Dr. Montessori discovered that children thrive when they do meaningful “work”. In order for children to participate in this work, the classroom environment must be designed to enable children to experience the real world and to explore their place in it. Each classroom allows children to experience:
The materials in the Sensorial area are geared to refine and raise awareness in a child’s senses. Sizes, textures, weights, temperatures and colors are all explored through the materials here.
Mathematics begins with simple applications of number and quantity. Further studies include addition, multiplication, subtraction and division, including four digit place value. The Montessori materials assist children in transitioning from concrete thinking (tangible objects in the early years) to abstract thinking (intangible ideas and concepts) in the elementary years.
Language studies in the Montessori classroom are based on the phonetic value of sounds. Sounds are blended into words and sentences. Students learn sentence composition and parts of speech. Students continue into creative writing and researching various subject matters.
The cultural subjects, science, botany, zoology, geography and spiritual subjects are also introduced by moving from the concrete form to the abstract.
At LifeSong, we share the love of God at every opportunity. We believe that creating a loving and accepting environment is the best way to show this love. We welcome families of all religions and faiths. We invite families to educate us in their particular traditions and values. We believe that a culturally diverse, inclusive attitude creates a respectful and collaborative culture that is essential to our mission and vision.
In the classroom, these beliefs transfer into action by helping those in need, praying at will and respecting all living things. As our classes study a particular geographic area, we will include lessons on faith from that area. Likewise, we will have lessons giving the background on most major holidays. We invite you into the classroom at any time to see this love in action!
“Just as language has many expressions: English, Swedish, Swahili, and so forth, so does elevation express itself by way of different creeds: Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism and many different belief systems in order to communicate with and about God.” (Maria Montessori)
